Hurricane Dorian UPDATE: 8/30/19
Hurricane Dorian is strengthening as it pushes across the warm Atlantic with the northern Bahamas and Florida still in its path for later in the holiday weekend.
As of 11 a.m. AST (EDT), Hurricane Dorian was located near 24.5 N and 69.8 W, or about 480 miles east of the northwestern Bahamas and 660 miles east of West Palm Beach, Fla. Dorian's maximum sustained winds are 110 mph, making it a strong Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale. The hurricane is churning northwestward at 10 mph. Its minimum central pressure remains dropped to 972 mb, or 28.70 inches of mercury.
Dorian has undergone substantial strengthening overnight and early this morning and it will likely strengthen today and Saturday. The hurricane is moving over very warm water with very light upper-level winds, so it will grow into a major hurricane today and could be a dangerous Category 4 hurricane when it approaches the Florida Atlantic Coast late Monday into early Tuesday.
Dorian will continue to be directed to the west-northwest thanks to strong high pressure building to its north. Dorian is still expected to move over the northern Bahamas Sunday and early Monday and the Florida Atlantic Coast overnight Monday into early Tuesday. There is concern that the hurricane could slow as it moves over Florida, bring prolonged periods of coastal storm surge, destructive winds and torrential downpours producing flooding.
A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the Northwestern Bahamas.
Dorian will likely soak the central Bahamas with 1 to 2 inches of rain, the northwest Bahamas with up to 6-12 inches and up to 15 inches of rain in the Southeast U.S.
The exact forecast track hasn’t been nailed down but confidence in a major hurricane slamming into Florida’s Atlantic Coast is growing. This means Florida Atlantic Coast residents need to implement hurricane as fast as possible. Coastal residents will need to prepare their properties against wind and a dangerous storm surge.
Tropical storm force winds exceeding 39 mph could arrive along the Florida Atlantic Coast by Sunday morning, making it harder to complete preparations. If you are in a hurricane evacuation zone, heed local official’s instructions and evacuate, if ordered. Dorian is going to be a dangerous hurricane.
All of Florida should prepare for days without power and flooding. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency. An emergency declaration provides state and local authorities access to emergency services and funding.
Dorian passed by Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Wednesday, producing heavy rain and tropical-storm force to near hurricane-strength winds. Large swells associated with Dorian will continue to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.
The recent Atlantic tropical activity is occurring just in time for the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Tropical activity typically is greatest between mid-August and late October.
